The buildings and structures we use every day.
An enormous amount of resources and energy goes into constructing and operating them.
Yet we still lack understanding of when and how much CO2 is emitted as a result.
You might wonder, “Where exactly does it come from?”
CO2 is emitted not only during construction, but also throughout the life of a building—while people live and work in homes and office buildings, energy is consumed and CO2 continues to be released.
CO2 is also generated during the production of construction materials, as well as during renovation and demolition. As a result, the total emissions over the entire lifecycle of a building or structure can be substantial.
At Obayashi Corporation, we see decarbonization as a key mission in our role as an environmentally responsible leader.
That means reducing CO2 emissions in the construction industry, expanding our contributions to decarbonization across society, and ultimately helping to build a more sustainable future.
This is the challenge we must take on—right here, right now.
Expanding technology, innovation, and collaboration—toward a broader circle of sustainability.
Let’s open the door to a decarbonized society.
Chapter 01
SOLUTION
Low-Carbon Technologies and Initiatives
in the Construction Process
Materials Development
Our efforts begin with the decarbonization and carbon reduction of construction materials.
Construction
By changing how people work and how machines operate, we are reducing CO2 emissions.
Operation and Renovation
We visualize energy consumption during building use to reduce “lifetime CO2 emissions.”
Demolition
We don’t see demolition as the end—but as the start of creating the future through reuse and recycling.
Chapter 02
VISION
Obayashi’s Vision
for a Decarbonized Society
Explore the Obayashi Group’s broad-ranging concepts and technologies aimed at achieving a decarbonized society—extending beyond the boundaries of construction.
Themes include resource circulation, biodiversity, energy, and transportation infrastructure.

Chapter 03 CREATION Realizing a Decarbonized Society and Creating New Social Value
Explore the many new value creation initiatives the Obayashi Group is making toward realizing a decarbonized society—starting with its efforts at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan.

Technologies and Initiatives
Related to Low Carbon
From material production and construction to operation, renovation, and demolition—CO2 is emitted at every stage of a building’s lifecycle.
This section introduces the Obayashi Group’s technologies, initiatives, and real-world examples aimed at minimizing those emissions.
